Orientation activities welcome new cohort to FLASS
EdUHK’s campus in August was alive with excitement as new students took part in a series of orientation activities ahead of the 2025/26 academic year. These events helped prepare them for the journey ahead, one that promises to support their growth both academically and personally.
At FLASS, the Faculty Orientation Reception on the Tai Po campus on 4 August marked the start of the celebrations. Around 150 senior-year entry students attended the half-day event, where they were introduced to FLASS, its four academic departments*, and the wide range of support available to them. This included academic advising, internship placements, and exchange opportunities. On 12 August, first-year students received programme-specific briefings during faculty orientation sessions. Soon after, on 18 and 19 August, all new students joined the University’s New Student Orientation Days. These sessions highlighted the many support services in place to help them settle into academic life and thrive at EduHK.
The Faculty-based Orientation Reception on 4 August was co-organised by the Student Affairs Office and FLASS, with support from other university centres. In a recorded welcome message, Professor Li Wai-keung, Dean of FLASS, reassured students that the faculty is committed to providing an education that not only helps them pursue their dreams, but also shapes their character and has a lasting impact on their lives. He encouraged students to be open to fresh ideas, adding, “The more you embrace your adventurous journey at EdUHK, the more you will be rewarded with new skills, insights, experiences, and friendships that will last a lifetime.”
After Professor Li’s recorded welcome, Dr Chan Man-ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies and Student Learning) of FLASS, provided an overview of the faculty’s management structure and the academic priorities of its four departments. He also introduced senior-year entry students to the range of support available at faculty and department level, including academic advising, programme-based internships, and overseas exchange opportunities. Dr Chan encouraged students to take part in exchanges abroad, noting, “learning overseas not only allows you to acquire new knowledge, but also teaches you how to work with people from different cultural backgrounds.”
Students also heard from various University teams, such as the Student Affairs Office, the Centre for Language in Education, the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Education, and the Global Affairs Office. Each unit shared useful resources and services designed to help students succeed. Following the main session, students joined smaller group presentations led by their programme teams, where they received tailored advice and guidance.
By combining education technology, AI, big data, and related fields, I will be better equipped to stand out in today’s competitive job market.
Among the attendees was Mr Singh Taranjot, a third-generation Indian student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Artificial Intelligence and Educational Technology (BSc(AI&EdTech)) programme offered by the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT). He remarked, “The internship arranged by the programme is especially attractive because it provides valuable hands-on experience and work-related knowledge. It will prepare me well for my job search after graduation. With AI now influencing so many fields, I even learnt that a local secondary school uses AI in archery training, this programme gives me an advantage. By combining education technology, AI, big data, and related fields, I will be better equipped to stand out in today’s competitive job market.”
While it will certainly open doors in the financial industry, I also believe the programme will prepare me for other career paths that require strong financial knowledge.
Also sharing her perspective was Ms Sharis Lam Wing-tai, who joined as a third-year student on the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Personal Finance (BA(PF)) programme, hosted by the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies . “In Hong Kong, many people are engaged in personal investment, which shows there is a growing demand for financial expertise. I chose BA(PF) because it is the first programme offered by a Hong Kong university to focus on personal and household financial needs. While it will certainly open doors in the financial industry, I also believe the programme will prepare me for other career paths that require strong financial knowledge,” Sharis said.
On 12 August, first-year students admitted to FLASS’s 11 undergraduate programmes attended dedicated briefing sessions, where programme leaders outlined the focus, curriculum, internship opportunities, and career prospects of their respective fields of study. Later, during the University-wide New Student Orientation Days on 18 and 19 August, newcomers were welcomed by their seniors and enjoyed a vibrant array of performances and activities organised by different student societies.
As the new academic year begins, newcomers are settling in by attending classes, making friends, and engaging in extracurricular activities across campus. The faculty warmly wishes all students a fulfilling and rewarding learning journey at EduHK.
Note *: The four departments under FLASS are the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE), the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT), the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) and the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies (SSPS).
